Progressing lessons vs sessions

In an effort to get you skating more, we recently introduced progression sessions for members.

We’ve had some misunderstandings about the progressing lessons and sessions at Copeland Park so we wanted to clarify some points for you.

When booking, whilst they cost the same, please note the important differences between a session and a lesson.

PROGRESSING LESSONS

A progressing lesson is like a driving lesson on private roads.

During the lesson:

  • The coach will not be skating (unless demonstrating skills)
  • There is structured and tracked learning
  • There is only other students of a similar level in the skatepark

Please note lessons are on Thursdays and Saturdays.

PROGRESSION SESSIONS

The progression sessions take place during the first hour of the open skate session. It contrast, it is like driving on the public highway with a driving instructor.

During progression sessions:

  • The coach will be skating
  • Other skatepark users will be skating
  • There will be light touch instruction
  • You can stay for the rest of the open session

The intention of his session is to introduce students to skating at an open skate session, and they will

  • learn the etiquette of using a skatepark, and
  • learn by observing other skaters, and interacting with them.

Eventually the student will be able to join open skate and practice independently.

Please note that the progression session is inherently more dangerous, however learning how to manage oneself in this environment is an important learning objective of the session, and this objective cannot be achieved during a lesson.
