The single biggest challenge to learning to skate is getting equipment which is:
- fit for purpose
- sized correctly for you
- adjusted for you
Which is why buying online isn’t best. It’s best to buy at skater-owned skate shop where they will ensure quality and sizing. At our Copeland Park site, we are able to go one step further. We offer a free beginner lesson, where we learn to carve, and adjust your trucks for you.
Is it fit for purpose?
First up; avoid buying online, because you can’t test that the trucks are actually functional.
The trucks are the turning system on a skateboard, and if they don’t turn, then you can’t balance, and you fall off.
Unlike bikes, skateboard retail is not regulated by the British Standards Institute, so quality and safety is not guaranteed.
If you want to check what you are buying yourself, you can learn the quick skateboard test, so you can identify a functional skateboard. Send skateboards back to the shop if the trucks do not flex smoothly!
Is the skateboard the correct size?
We are all different shapes & sizes, and without experience you’ll probably need our help with choosing the right size.
The size, specifically, the wheelbase is the most important aspect of the skateboard.
You can read our guide to buying a beginner skateboard and refer to our sizing guide, but it’s always best to come and see experienced skateboarders to get sized up.
Free lesson & adjustment service on collection
When you buy a complete you receive our unique fitting and adjustment service.
This includes a free lesson, where we learn our stance, how to push, and then, we learn to carve. It is during carving that you will find out whether the trucks need adjusting. We have the tools to do this for you.
