3. Your first 360 on a ramp

We need to train our basic kickturn to a level where can apply it to tricks, like grinds and rotating ollies.
We do this by practicing on the spot.

To complete this skill you should be able to

  • do a backside (the way your are facing) three quarter turn (270 degrees)
  • do a frontside (the way you do are not facing) turn at least halfway (180 degrees)

Use cones or find a line or mark on the ground where you can check you have made the rotation.

If you can do a 360 turn both ways you have mastered this skill.

360 on the ramp

We’re going to learn our first 360 trick by taking our 270 backside kickturn to the ramp.

We should have our fakie revert on lock for this trick.

Find a quarterpipe, or preferably a miniramp. The miniramp is better because we can control our speed better in our approach.

  1. Ride fakie towards the ramp slowly
  2. Touch the heel edge so we approach the ramp at a slight angle
  3. Enter the ramp, poised to do a 270 kickturn
  4. Your speed will reduce as you come to the apex of your line, this is when we do a 270 degree kickturn
  5. Ride away, applying some weight to the toe edge to complete the 360 turn.
  6. Hi five your mate.

What next?

  • Increase speed, going higher up the ramp.
  • make the kickturn a full 360, without having to carve into the trick

Eventually you will get higher and higher, and be able to do this trick on the coping. You will do a 270 degree kickturn, at which point you will be able to do a backside pivot on the coping. This trick is called a cab pivot.
